Abstract:
Over the last two decades, data mining methods proved to be powerful tools of information extraction. This realization raised concerns about individual privacy. In response, researchers developed two privacy protection mechanisms: perturbation methods and cryptographic methods.
In this talk, I will briefly explain these two approaches, and introduce the hybrid privacy definition that provides participants with more flexibility in solving private data analysis tasks. This will be examplified over the private record linkage problem. I will show that the relaxed definition provides significant savings in communication and computation costs while maintaining accuracy and privacy considerably.
Bio:
Ali Inan received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in computer engineering from Sabanci University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 2004 and 2006 respectively. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate in computer science at the University of Texas at Dallas.
His research interests lie at the intersection of privacy, security, data mining and databases: security and privacy issues raised by data mining; distributed data mining techniques; security issues in databases; applied cryptography and Secure Multi-Party Computation techniques.
Ali is a member of the IEEE Computer Society.
